Everyday we get up and as part of our "get-ready" routine we wash our face (along with other things.)
I have what is considered normal skin, as opposed to greasy, oily, or dry.
Even with my "normal' skin I tend to get a few breakouts on the most common places. Around the nose, chin and along the hairline. Not too noticable, but just enough.
It leaves my skin looking kinda like it isn't clean. I have found a way to prevent that... toner!
Toners help clean the face and reduce the appearence of pores.
I use toners in place of soap or the honey wash. You don't want to rid your face of all the oils on your face. Some oils are good.
In an article I read it explains the importance of keeping the pH of your skin. Your skin creates a certain acid (pH) on your face using oil and dirt. When you use harsh facial cleaners, they strip away these natural oils. Your skin can recreate these in a few hours, but this acid prevents bacteria buildup.
There are different kinds of toners.
The first is known as skin bracers or fresheners. These typically have little or no alcohol and helps keep the skin moist. These are good for all types of skin, although it may "sting" sensitive skin.
Secondly, skin tonics. These contain all little bit of alcohol and are good for all types of skin but work best on normal skin.
Lastly, Astringents. These are the strongest forms of toners. They contain a higher percentage of alcohol and are best used on oily skin as your face is drying. But, because of the high alcohol content, it tends to remove a lot of that good oil.
For the recipe below, I would recomend using it to clean your face. I use it for the days in between doing a mask or the honey wash.
So for today, here is an easy DIY tonic.
1/2 cup witch hazel
10-15 drops of orange essential oil
Mix together in a jar.
Before use, shake well. The oil tends to stay on the surface.
Here are some benefits to why I use Orange Essential Oil for this tonic.
Anti-septic - It inhibits microbial growth.
Skin Treatment - Orange essential oil is shown to promote the production of collagen as well as increase the blood flow to the skin. It is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin as well as acne-prone skin.
Encourages Detoxification - Detox and cleansing properties.
Anti-Cancer - D-limonene is a super-nutrient that occurs in Orange Essential Oil. It has been studied extensively for its ability to prevent cellular mutations and combat cancer tumor growth.
Anti-inflammatory - It provides relief from both internal and external inflammation caused by infections. It is helpful in treating swollen tissue by stimulating blood circulation.
Anti-depressant - Well-known for its uplifting properties, orange essential oil is soothing to the mind and helps to relieve stress. It is refreshing and relaxing and commonly used for the treatment of anxiety. ( A great way to start your day!)
