I mentioned a few times that I use coconut oil as the base for most of my lip balms.
I wanted to take some time and go over why I really like coconut oil.
The list is endless!
Before I go any farther I want to say that the best coconut oil is Cold-pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. Cold-pressed means that the oil has been extracted without using heat above the temperature of 120*F. This is important because too much heat will destroy the fatty acids found in the oil. If these fatty acids are destroyed they will become unrecognizable to the body.
If your coconut oil says refined, it means that it is made up of a product called copra. Copra is the dried meat of coconut oil. Because this product is made by drying using a number of methods, the most common ones know are sundrying, smoke drying, or kiln drying. These processes of drying can contaminate the meat and therefore when oil is extracted from this dry coconut meat.the oil that is extracted isn't pure. Any coconut oil made from thiss product is labeled as refined. The oil is extracted from the dry coconut by using high temperatures. Chemicals are added to increase shelf life.
Extra-Virgin or Virgin Coconut oil is made from fresh fruit usually within two days of being picked.
So, for starters, How is Coconut Oil made? Coconut Oil is extracted from the meat of coconuts. It is a solid below 76* and as it becomes a liquid at temperatures higher than that.
It is edible, therefore, it goes good with my theory of not putting anything on my body that I wouldn't put in it.
Coconut oil has a few theraputic properties.
Coconut oil has mousiterizing and regenerative qualities. which means is can rejuvimate and revitalize the skin and hair. Because it contains all these properties, coconut oil is able to kill unhealthy bacteria, fungi and microorganisms on contact! It also, can fight off infections. Coconut oil is made up off a medium chain of triclycerides which allows it to be absorbed deep in the skin.
Anything that you put on your skin is going to be absorbed into your body. Tiny capillaries lay just beneath your skin and take whatever is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, where it is distributed all throughout your body!
Here are some things that coconut oil in known to do:
- It has been shown to be antibacterial, antiviral & antioxidant by nature, as listed above.
- It helps the skin heal and regenerate.
- It helps the skin retain mousture and improves hydration.
- It provides a protective barrier between the skin and the air.
- It relives dryness and itching.
- It is all-natural and doesn't contain harmful synthetic chemicals.
- The fats in the oil act as an emollient (which means: having the quality of softening or soothing the skin) and soften the skin by increasing the level of surface lipids.
That is only a few! That is enough for me. What about you?
I hope that this has given you an idea on just how good coconut oil is for your body!
